Web Tip: Avoid Dead End Thank You Pages

Valerie Karnes | March 18, 2011

Does your website’s Thank You page send visitors on a one way to a dead end? Many websites fail to engage visitors or encourage an action other than closing out of the site after a form submission or product purchase. It’s important to continue to engage your customers, so here’s a few tips:

First things first, always make sure your Thank You page is very clear. If a purchase was made, clearly state that the purchase process is complete and the order has been submitted. If a form submission was made, let the visitor know their information was received and when they can expect to receive a response. In addition, send an email confirmation with the details of their submission.

Follow the clear messaging with opportunities to drive visitors to other areas of your site or offer additional ways to interact or engage.

Refer a Friend - Encourage your visitors to spread the word on your behalf. Using viral sharing platforms like ShareThis and AddThis, makes it easy for visitors to share your website with their friends and family.

Link to your Blog or other relevant pages - Send visitors to other areas of your site that may be of interest to them. Their experience on your site does not have to end after a form submission or product purchase.

Show Related Products - If a visitor just made a purchase, show them other related products that may be of interest. You’d be surprised how often shoppers immediately return to make another order.

Feedback Survey - Ask your visitors about their experience on your website. The experience is fresh on their minds and they’ll be able to communicate any frustrations they had while using your site. Get to know what’s working for you and what’s hurting you and make improvements to your site to reduce frustrations.

Coupon for Next Purchase - Encourage your customers to come back. They know your business and have trusted you enough to already make a purchase. Just make it clear the discount cannot be used on their recent purchase.

Order Tracking - Offer a way for your customers to track their order. Reduce customer service inquiries and gain trust with your customers by allowing them to know what’s going on with their order: when it’s processed, shipped and delivered.

Using any of the above tactics should help you avoid driving your visitors straight down a dead end and hopefully improve your relationship with your customers and encourage repeat business.
