Responsible Pet Owners' Month

Bobby Arispe | February 22, 2011

Here at Creative Link we love our pets. In fact, most of us have more than one pet in our homes that we consider family. So in honor of February's Responsible Pet Owner Month, we put together an infograph to see who rules the office: the cat people or dog people.

So if you're one of those cat or dog people or even if you have a feathered friend, you may be asking yourself, "What can I do to be a responsible pet owner?" We put together these top three points on being a great pet owner and having a healthy and happy new family member.

1. Get your dog or cat spayed or neutered if you haven't already. This helps to control animal overpopulation and can also help protect your pet from various diseases. Check online for local mobile spay/neutering programs that can help save you money and time.

2. Proper training is essential, especially in dogs. Many dogs end up in shelters due to behavioral problems that could have been prevented or changed with a skilled trainer. A properly trained dog will also be more fun to walk and will be better socialized at dog parks and in off-leash situations.

3. A well-balanced and nutritious diet is crucial to pets of all ages. Do some research to find out what food is going to be best suited for your pet's breed and age. Make sure your pets are always up-to-date on their shots and heartworm medications. Along with high-quality food and immunizations, you'll want to make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise and proper grooming. All of it  helps your pet to have a long healthy life.

There are many great online resources for what ever pet you may have. Be sure to do your homework; pet ownership is a big commitment. Finding the right pet to fit your home, lifestyle and activity level is crucial to both your happiness and sanity. Most importantly, enjoy the unconditional love and happiness that pets bring every day.
