Creative Link was given the opportunity to create and brand the promotional material for the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves Tournament which benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio. The creative team began producing some amazing concepts, and I was asked to help create a video* for the campaign. I personally didn’t know a whole lot about the tournament, but after researching and talking to the boxing fans here at Creative Link, I quickly concluded that this was hardly “just an amateur boxing tournament”. With a history of producing amazing boxers like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Oscar De La Hoya, I realized that this event is going to be another day of history in the making. No pressure.
The creative team developed an amazing branding package that covers so much detail of the event that I think it deserves it’s own blog post. Art Director Bobby Arispe designed tickets, invites, t-shirts, posters, outdoor billboards, event banners, website landing page, table tents and coasters...and when it came to the TV spot, we needed to figure out a way to keep the energy of the design while getting across the message that the Golden Gloves Tournament benefits the local Boys & Girls Clubs. Several ideas where thrown out...brilliant ideas, but we realized getting Mike Tyson to punch out visual metaphors of youth issues while he reenacts his rendition of “In the Air Tonight” was going to be a little out of our financial range.
So we sat down and laid out a direction to make an exciting video that uses resources we already had at our finger tips. After settling on a solid concept for the spot, Heather “knocked out” an awesome script**. From there, Bobby designed some killer key images and on-screen supers, and I drew up a storyboard.

We then took the script to those handsome guys at The Living Room, and they delivered an amazing audio track. The audio track was so good I knew that the visuals REALLY had to deliver. Cut to Rick locked away for hours in the editing suite, hyped up on Rockstar and Wasabi almonds. The results are something we created entirely in-house, and like a champion boxer we are proud of our nimble ability to deliver some hard-hitting results.
